Calling this number was an interesting experience, as it seems that AT&T's system is completely incapable of finding its own locations based on ZIP codes. It could be that this number is only meant for international callers and doesn't know how to react to domestic calls, but for whatever reason, calling this number didn't work out properly.
It started out easily enough, as the system welcomed me to calling AT&T's international phone number and asked me the purpose of my call. I said that I was planning to set up a new account with AT&T, and the system asked me if I wanted to move over a phone number to an existing AT&T account. I said no, I wanted to set up a new account and provided the phone number that I already had. The system didn't recognize my number and asked me to provide my account number or phone number on my existing account.
I said again that I had no account, with the system saying I could instead provide the ZIP code where I wanted services. I offered my ZIP code, and the system said it would connect me with a customer service representative who could help. After a couple minutes, I was connected to an agent who asked how she could help me. I told her that I wanted to set up a new account and asked how to go about doing that.
She told me I had two options. I could either get started on the phone and have her present different prices I might be comfortable with, or, go speak to a neighborhood representative in my location after getting information from her. I opted for the latter and asked where I might find the closest location to me.
The agent said she'd be happy to look that up and asked for my ZIP code. I provided it, and she asked me to give the city where that was located. I gave my city, and she said it didn't match what she had on her computer. I repeated the ZIP code to make sure she had it right, and she said that while that matched what she had typed, her computer was giving her a location in another state.
I checked the location she had given me and found that the city where her computer thought I was located didn't have any digits the same as the ZIP code I had given her. She said she understood that, but the system wouldn't give her anything else. At that point, I thanked her for her time and ended the call.
Overall, I thought the representative wanted to do her job well, but the system didn't really allow her to provide much help. The system ran into real problems, makingit impossible to get anything done. Based on this, I wouldn't use this number. The information provided was far too unreliable to be useful.
