When you call the customer service phone number for Nelnet Loans, you're greeted by an automated messaging system. It says, "Thank you for calling Nelnet," and then there is complete silence. I tried pressing the keypad, but there was no response. I then attempted to engage voice activation by speaking, in case the line was voice activated; again, there was only silence.

I hung up and dialed again, and the same thing happened: "Thank you for calling," then complete silence. I assume their customer service phone line is broken, or there's some sort of significant issue going on with it, but it's eerie nonetheless. 

The second time I called, I didn't hang up right away. I was curious if anything would happen. With other customer service phone lines, sometimes if you don't say anything or make a keypad selection, an alternative phone menu will be presented or you will be automatically transferred to a representative. In this case, for this specific phone number, nothing happened.

(I can't explain why, but the creepy silence somehow reminded me of The Backrooms.) Anyway, I stayed on the line for a few minutes, waiting to see if anything would happen, but there was no response. So, the line is broken.

I entered the phone number in a search engine, curious to see what other people are saying. The number is still listed as the official customer service phone number for the company. That is very bizarre. Additionally, I didn't find any information on the line being down or broken, so perhaps my experience is a fluke.

Regardless, customers should consider trying a different number or seeking assistance via the website. At the time of this writing, 888-486-4722 is a dead end.
